Once, in Mumbai, I got into a cab, and the driver asked me what kind of music I wanted to listen to. And I wanted to listen to the music he wanted to listen to. So he begins to play Rob Stewart… I’ve never bought any Rob Stewart music, or listened to it intentionally, but he read me as American, and made the judgement that I would like to listen to that kind of music. It is not just about where we think people are from, but also about where they think we are from, and what they are reading us as. How does their reading of us affect the information they are willing to give us? How do they bracket us, our understanding, and our ability to understand them?
