Reading-Writing (Semester 1)

This course will take the students slowly step by step through some of the mainstays of South Asian literary narrative—the nationalist movement in particular. Nationalism will be understood through the events of Partition, the ideology and fate of South Asian secularisms, and the rhetorics of the Hindu Right and the emerging Left, and will end with a brief foray into a pre-modern literary and historical imagination that will foreground how contingent our notions of the relation to secularism, historiography and cultural imagination are.
