Introduction to Literary Genres

An introductory course to the discipline of literary studies, the art of close-reading, the tools of literary appreciation and the employment of a critical framework while reading texts. At the heart of the course is the process of reading and students are expected to understand this through the exploration of different literary works (poems, essays, stories and drama) and through the practice of writing about literature. The course will encourage students to consider why we read, how we read, the makings of literature and its many manifestations.
