Religion and Society

This course focuses on the historical and sociological examination of religion’s impact on and intersection with the structures of South Asian societies, examines the history of the organization of and interactions among religious groups in India, including communities of Buddhists, Jains, Hindus, and Muslims. The course will consider such issues as the formation of religious identities, competition and conversion between religious groups, the economics of religion, the definition and structuring of religious authority, and the organization of religious life with respect to distinctions of sex, caste, lay/ monastic, householder/ ascetic, and popular/ elite.
