This course will engage with original texts (with translation) and secondary essays related to Indian philosophical thought. These texts will be studied along with the study of philosophical traditions of India. The course will begin with the study of some Sutra literature and then also introduce students to the idea of vāda or intellectual debate. The foundational principles of vāda will be studied through Nyāya Philosophy. This will be followed by a study of historical transformations of Philosophical schools using the example of Sānkhya other philosophical traditions. The course will finally look at the debates and comparative studies across these philosophical traditions and the texts of doxography, syncretic texts and sceptical thought.
