Skepticism helps philosophy grow in a destructive way. It raises questions and challenges the foundation of systematic philosophy. Epistemologists and logicians try to respond to those questions and deal with the challenges. This course will discuss the philosophical journey from the skeptical insecurity to the theories of truth and knowledge that provide us with some wisdom about the reliability and limits of our belief-system. Topics include: Skepticism: Greek and Indian skeptics. The limits of credence. Plato’s theory of knowledge. Truth as in ‘justified true belief’. Correspondence theories. Coherence theories. Pragmatic theories. Gettier problems.
