Urban Sociology

The objective of this course is to understand how Urban Sociology developed as a discipline. Some of the focus points of the course are:

  • Origins and foundations of Urban Sociology through the works of Ferdinand Tonnies, Max Weber, George Simmel
  • The Chicago School of thought, with particular focus on Robert Park, Louis Wirth and Ernest Burgess
  • Network society through the works of Manual Castells
  • Major implications associated with urbanization: migration and crime
  • Particular focus on India and the main challenges that India is facing due to urbanization
